I think Sally has given you a more useful response than I could. There is one strange thing in English about the years. As others have said, the correct way to say 1962 is as two numbers, 19 then 62, or "nineteen sixty-two". However, it is important to realize that we say the years since 2000 differently. For instance, 2000 is pronounced "two thousand". 2005 is pronounced "two thousand five". Probably in 2013 or 2014 people will go back to saying "twenty thirteen" or "twenty fourteen". Finally, years less than 1000 are usually split into two parts also. The year 865 would be called "eight sixty-five". Years ending in 00 are called "hundred", like 1800 is called "eighteen hundred". There are many special cases. If you're not sure, try breaking it up into two numbers.
