English Speaking Exercise (All Levels)

Course 202, Unit 9, Lesson 5

Surprise Party

Instructions: Please recite the following paragraph. Press the 'add audio submission' button to record and submit this exercise.

Gary Johnson went to work last Monday, as usual. He walked into the office, but nobody was there. He looked in the offices. He looked in the cafeteria. He looked in the employee bathrooms. He even looked in the basement. Gary didn't know what to do. He walked back to his office. The lights in his office were turned off. He turned on the lights and everybody he worked with yelled: "Surprise!" It was Gary's birthday.

    good job, but you must work on your "-ed" words.

    pronounce -ed as /ɪd/ only after /t/ or /d/

    visit=> visited   /vizətɪd/

    land=> landed /lænɪd/

    for all other words it is just /t/ or /d/. no new syllables.

    watched /wɒtʃ/

    looked /lʊkt/

    turned /tɜːnd/

    worked /wɜːkt/

    other words to practice:

    office /ɑːfɪs/

    even /iːvn/

    walked=walkt...office (do not pronounce the e)...looked=lookt..even...turned = turnd...These words are pronounced in a way that is very confusing and will probably allow you to be misunderstood. I will recite them for you. Please practice and then listen to the entire passage to compare and practice some more. You are doing well! \o/

    Good attempt. Practice words ending in 'ed' (looked, walked, yelled) and also cafeteria and even. Please listen to my audio. ;-)
