I was on a vacation in the first part of September. I went by an airplane. I was in Barcelona.

I was on a vacation in the first part of September. I went by an airplane. I was in went to Barcelona.
"I was in Barcelona" is grammatically correct but "I went to Barcelona" answers the particular question better.
My last vacation was in the first part of September. I went to Barcelona by airplane.
Typically we would say "I flew to Barcelona" and it is understood that it was by plane.
