What can and can’t they do?

Instructions: Write a list of rules using the vocabulary from this lesson. EX. 1. You can’t smoke in the park. 2. You can park at the restaurant but not at the library.

    Du kannst nicht schnell AUF einer Hauptstraße fahren, aber du kannst schnell AUF EINER Rennstrecke fahren.

     

    Du DARFST nicht zu spät zur Arbeit KOMMEN.

    -> you CAN go late to work, but you are not allowed to :)

    can = können (du kannst)

    to be allowed to = etwas dürfen (du darfst)

     

    EDIT: That applies to the others sentences as well. Rules are normally stated with "dürfen" or "nicht dürfen".  If you say: "Du kannst nicht schnell fahren" it means "you are not able to drive fast". So if there is a rule that forbids something, I would say in german: "Ich darf etwas nicht tun." But if I am not able to do something (that can be because of a rule, but rules can be broken :p ) than I would say "Ich kann etwas nicht tun".
