    il is an article:

    you can say "EGLI è alto e bello" that is grammatically correct. In the common language we usually say LUI instead of EGLI, "LUI è alto e bello", this is gramatically uncorrect because LUI can't be used as a subject but only as a complement (like HIM in English), in the common and corrent language EGLI sounds a bit old fashioned.
