  The last time that I went shopping was two weeks ago. I bought my newborn, baby cousin some presents: a very nice skirt with a blouse and a jacket, socks and pink shoes; the total cost was 20 Kuwaiti dinars. [Colons enable you to do two things in your sentences that commas can't do: (1) signal to your readers that you're about to introduce a series of related items or ideas; and (2) create a pause that gives added emphasis to the word or words that follow. Use a semicolon (rather than a comma) to separate the two independent clauses in a compound sentence when (1) the two clauses are not separated by a conjunction; (2) when you want to add strength to the pause between the two clauses (regardless of whether it's followed by a conjunction); or (3) when the clauses are lengthy.] Practice makes perfect!
