English Writing Exercise (All Levels)

Course 201, Unit 7, Lesson 3

Needs and Wants

Instructions: Compare “need” and “want” in sentences about six people: you and me, a boy and a girl, a man and a woman. Also, use positives and negatives of either “need” or “want” in some of the sentences. Example: I want a car, but I need to finish my college degree. She wants ice cream; she does not want broccoli.

John, the easiest way to reach my home is by a bus, although it would take thirty minutes more than a taxi but it is a cheap option.
If you like to come by taxi then ask driver to drop you at Blue Moon Community. It is a straight forward and easy way to reach. It would cost you around $35 and will take max. twenty five minutes.

However if you wish to come by bus then take route number X21 from your bus stop in a direction towards the Race course ground. Please follow bus stop names on bus display board.
Change to bus Z13 from the Mercato stop which goes in the South direction. Z13 comes after every 15 minutes.
Step out on stop name Wadi Ruwi.
Walk three hunderd meters in the North direction and then take first right turn. You will find a Hotel Appartment "London Light" on your right hand, immediately after a traffic signal is there, take left and walk again another three hunderd meters.
You will find a compound named "Blue Moon". Please ask the Security to call me on my number 124.

by a bus ► by bus (no article when talking about mode of transport: by train, by airplane) but it is a cheap option ► but it is a cheaper option (yours is fine, but using comparative is better here) take max. twenty five minutes ► take up to twenty five minutes (or take no more than...) in a direction towards the ... ► towards the ... follow bus stop names on ► follow the bus stop names on (definitive article required for specific references) goes in the South direction ► goes in a southerly direction (or: goes southward) Z13 comes after every 15 minutes ► Z13 comes every 15 minutes (or: is on a 15 min. schedule) Step out on stop name Wadi Ruwi ► Get off at the Wadi Ruwi stop (I'm giving you the customary American usage. Your local dialect might dictate otherwise. Preposition and related phrases are extremely localized!) North direction ► Northerly direction take first right turn ► take the first right turn (the first, the second, etc.) Appartment ► Apartment take left ► take a left walk again another three hunderd meters ► walk another three hunderd meters ("again" is redundant here) "Blue Moon". ► "Blue Moon." (American style manuals calls for sliding period under/before closing quotation marks. Brits generally don't do that.) Excellent work! What you wrote is nearly perfect.

REVISED VERSION OF MY COMMENT ABOVE (due to recent change at LiveMocha, all line breaks are stripped, resulting in unreadable blobs. I reformat it to improve legibility)   ►by a bus → by bus (no article when talking about mode of transport: by train, by airplane) ►but it is a cheap option → but it is a cheaper option (yours is fine, but using comparative is better here) ►take max. twenty five minutes → take up to twenty five minutes (or take no more than...) ►in a direction towards the ... → towards the ... follow bus stop names on → follow the bus stop names on (definitive article required for specific references) goes in the South direction → goes in a southerly direction (or: goes southward) ►Z13 comes after every 15 minutes → Z13 comes every 15 minutes (or: is on a 15 min. schedule) ►Step out on stop name Wadi Ruwi → Get off at the Wadi Ruwi stop (I'm giving you the customary American usage. Your local dialect might dictate otherwise. Preposition and related phrases are extremely localized!) ►North direction → Northerly direction ►take first right turn → take the first right turn (the first, the second, etc.) ►Appartment → Apartment ►take left → take a left ►walk again another three hunderd meters → walk another three hunderd meters ("again" is redundant here) ►"Blue Moon". → "Blue Moon." (American style manuals calls for sliding period under/before closing quotation marks. Brits generally don't do that.) >>>>> Excellent work! What you wrote is nearly perfect.
